There has been no activity here on The Addiction for a few reasons...

Restoring our 1964 Shasta is taking up the majority of my free time. It takes a good amount of time to do this type of thing. I have also been keeping the blog on the project for 1964 Shasta Louise.

I have also been doing my admin duties at the VSTF. Both sites have been keeping my pretty busy along with the restoration. One guy can only do so much.

Sooo... The Addiction has suffered like I feared it would. I will more then likely come back to posting here again at some point. I just don't know when that would be. In the mean time there are plenty of other blogs listed to the right to keep you company. Be sure to enjoy those and let me know if you find anymore great vintage blogs out there. We will be back at some point or if there is any earth shaking news to report.

Well, the Winter Olympics are over. I'm proud of the four Hockey teams by the way. Four? Yep, four. The Mens and Womans teams of the US and Canada. Yeah, I know I live in the states. I am also a big fan of great hockey. However, if you can't watch Hockey there is always...ahhh...ummm....Curling?

Alright, I'm kidding. I have nothing against Curling. In fact I would love to try it. I stumbled across this pattern on Ebay. How vintage and how cool is this? This sweater is so bad. So horrible that it is cool...

There was a ad in the last Atomic Ranch for this company. I thought it was worth a mention. If you like vintage farm/industrial lighting this is the place for you. Some of their lighting would work if you lean in that direction. Some cool stuff. Look in their "vintage sconce" and "vintage pendants" for some neat stuff. Most of their fixtures are not cheap though.

Make It! Mid Century Modern...

I'm not sure what to make of this one. I love to see books and magazines going after Mid Century stuff. I have picked up Ready Made a few times and seen a few Mid Century inspired projects in there. Cool stuff but not enough to justify buying the entire magazine. Well this is all Mid Century, so I'm told.

Make It! Mid Century Modern is a book that can either be purchased in hard copy or PDF file from the link. The book is 76 pages and includes full scale printable templates. From what I can tell it includes some pretty famous designs. The PDF download is $9.99 and the hard copy is $18.00.

I don't have this book and I don't think I will be getting it. It is a good idea but the projects in it don't seem to be very advanced. If a person has the tools and the ability to create a Nelson ball clock then that person probably doesn't need directions on how to do it. It is a project that is simple enough to be deconstructed just by looking at it. That person could save that $18 on materials for a project. Again. That isn't a jab on the authors. I would have selected projects that are a bit tougher. Maybe a second advanced book.

Wow, time flew by and I haven't posted a thing. I have been preoccupied with life, working on the trailer stuff, and other things. I'm sorry for kinda checking out for awhile. But...

Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles With Step-by-Step Techniques is a 200 page book with 33 how-to styles to help you achieve the look. I haven't had a chance to page through this book but it looks pretty good to me from the "sneak peek" pages I have seen on their website. The best price I have found is right off of their website for $32.95. They also have a neat little blog called the Bobby Pin Blog. Any readers have any reviews on this book? I am curious.

Where To Get Tapered Table Legs...

Christopher was asking where you could get vintage style tapered wooden legs for his coffee table. I have found them locally at Menards. Others may not have such luck at their local hardware store.

I see they are also available on Amazon by a company named Waddell. I think they are only made in even numbered sizes. Here are the sizes available...

Rejuvenation Hourglass Collection...

Rejuvenation is releasing it's new Hourglass Collection in February 2010. The collection is based off of a 1959 Stockholm series manufactured by EJS Lighting. They will have a three way switch for down, up, or up-and-down lighting. They will be available in brushed, bronzetone aluminum, black, or white enamel. I gotta say that the brushed is my favorite.

You can also sign up to win a fixture on their site so check it out. They don't have prices listed but I'm sure they won't be cheap. While amazing, none of their stuff is what I would call affordable. Nice eye candy though.

Kid Kustoms...

Ok, this is probably one of the coolest and dumbest things I have ever seen.

It is the Roddler from Kid Kustoms. It is a full fender hot rod inspired stroller. It is made from 6061 Billet Machined Aluminum, Stainless hardware, and Light weight Aluminum tubing. The standard colors are available in black, white, and red.

Another cool feature is that there is a conversion kit to turn the chassis of the stroller into a trike which can also be purchased...

So what is dumb about all of this? The stroller is $1,999. You can up grade to a custom model with custom fabrics and paint STARTING at $3,500...

Really? WHO buys this stuff? Don't get me wrong it is very cool. But... who has money for this kind of thing? Heck, it doesn't even have any storage. One thing any real parent would want in a stroller. If there is a bad ass stroller award this thing would win. However, I can't imagine any sane person forking over cash for such a thing. Maybe strollers are things better made of cheap Chinese plastic then of aircraft aluminum.

There really hasn't been too much thrifting recently because we are trying to save some dough for the trailer and other things. I did manage to find a few thing here and there...

I have been looking for another cabinet like this blonde one that I have my Tiki collection in. The picture in the link shows the beginning of my collection and now the Tikis are busting the seams of the cabinet. I wanted another one to flank the room and hold some of my Tikis and books. I found this one that is the exact same model but in a dark finish. It does have different knobs than the blonde cabinet and the glass is missing. I think I am going to paint it to match the blonde cabinet. The finish on this dark one isn't quite as nice as it looks in the picture. It won't look exactly like the blonde cabinet once painted but oh well. I may also get some glass cut to fit.

I picked up this Milton Bradley US map puzzle from 1961. I have been looking for one of these for a while. This will be used in a project for the Shasta trailer. I got the cabinet and the puzzle for 25 bucks at a estate sale.

I found these tapered legs at a thrift store for $1. Not a bad deal. I don't have any plans for them right now but you never know.

This isn't actually a recent find. I found this plant stand at a swap meet for a dollar. It needs a repaint that I just haven't got around to doing.

I found this circular plant stand a few days ago at a thrift store for $4.50. It too needs a repaint. None of the welds on either stand seem to be broken so I think both were a pretty good deal.

"A great find! Our retro 1950's orange vinyl/plastic covered couch is in great condition. It has no holes, rips or tears. All seams are intact and the legs are tight and sturdy. There is one small wear spot on the right back where staples were used in the construction. This is not visible from the front of the couch. This couch was always covered (we know, why did Aunt Doris keep plastic covered, but she did.??) It is 79" long, 28.5" high and 31" deep. It has two cushions. The label under the cushions says it was made by Union Furniture in Jefferson, WI. Delivery can be arranged. This is a really great retro piece at a reasonable price."

Mad Men Prop Master Interview...

Collector's Weekly did an really great interview with Mad Men's Prop Master Scott Buckwald. Mr. Buckwald has a job that I would love to have for a couple of reasons..

1. I love movies, creating things, and doing art. I also dig movie props and seeing how they are made. I lurk a bit over at places like the Replica Props Forum. It's pretty geeky but I enjoy it. I myself haven't made any movie prop replicas (other than a Tusken Raider costume for Halloween one year) but who knows maybe some day.

2. He gets to work on Mad Men. What a great show to work on. Sure being a prop master would be awesome but if you got to work on a show that is also set in a time period that you are passionate about how much cooler would that be?

Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots...

I found these boots in an issue of Men's Journal and thought they looked pretty slick. I like the classic look of these boots. They are from Wolverine's 1000 Mile Collection. The model pictured above is the 1000 Mile boot in rust. Probably my favorite. They also have one called the Darby that I like. The Darby looks a lot like a pair of reproduction WWII boots that I have.

From what I can tell is that they are sold at limited stores. I haven't found them online yet. No matter, the best I can tell is that they retail for $399. I certainly won't be getting a pair for that price. If anyone does get them I would like to hear your thoughts on them.

Vintage Child's Kick Scooter...

About 5 years ago I found a kid's kick scooter in my Grandma's barn. I though I would take it home and fix it up. I'm not really sure how old it is. I think it is pretty old because you don't see too many with the wooden foot board. As you can see it was in pretty rough shape. The paint was pretty far gone and a lot of rust all over...

The forks were bent out of shape. The fender had a good size dent in it. The wood foot bed was cracked underneath...

Sad shape all around...

So... I pulled it apart when I got it home and removed as much rust as I could. I primed it and was going to restore it. But.. it got shelved so I could work on some other projects.. A few months ago I started to work on it again. I thought I would give it a western theme. Not sure why. Just thought it would go well with the wood foot board. Here is what I did to it...

Sanded and re-primed it one more time.
Straighted the frame.
Banged out the dent in the fender.
Added a brace to keep the forks straight.
Painted it with Colonial Red and Ivory paint.
Clear coated it.
Polished the brake and added a spring to make it work better.
Made new foot boards.
Made leather grips for the handle bars and a leather pad for the center stand.
Added all new hardware.

I think it turned out well. I could have done a better job but, I was VERY READY to end this project. It seemed to take forever to get it done. Here it is...

You can see the forks are now straight and the brace added...

The new foot board. I carved a bucking bronco image in it. I stained and top coated it. I added upholstery tacks to add some traction and to dress it up a bit. I think it fits the theme...

The new leather grips...

No more dent in the fender. The tires are still in decent shape. I didn't touch the whitewalls. They are scratched up but I just thought I would leave it like that...

Here it is with another kid's stamped metal scooter we found at a sale. Snagged it for 8 bucks. Which is a great deal. I don't think this one will get touched for awhile. Not until a lot of other projects get done. Like a Shasta...

One note: The paint I used SUCKS. There is not other way to say it. It is already started chipping during reassembly even though I took my time and tried to do a nice job spraying it. The paint is Rustoleum Painter's Touch. It is way too soft. Not tough paint at all. I will never use this paint again unless it is something decorative that will never ever get touched.

Ultimately, I'm not sure how much use this scooter will see. Even though I added a brace it is not the best riding scooter. The forks have some play in them and it probably isn't the safest thing in the world. That and it weighs a ton for something it's size. The stamped metal scooter is a lot lighter and maybe a better scooter to play with.

I think I will just keep it around because my Dad may have played with it as a kid.

I found The (dog) House; Barclay and Jake's Ranch Bungalow Retreat some time ago. Then my computer crashed and lost quite a bit of stuff I had planned for the our blog. I kinda forgot about The (dog) House for a bit (sorry guys). But...these things happen. I was reminded of their blog from them posting here. Hey! There they are! It was good to check back in with them and see how they had come along. When I first found them the blog was still pretty young.

I really dig their kitchen and newest version of their dinning room. The blog has progressed nicely and I urge our readers to check it out!

This could be great or a great big flop. I would love to see a magazine to cover all of the Mid Century things that a magazine like Atomic Ranch fails to cover. I think the 1920's to 1980's is too big of a scope to really be a good magazine. You can't please all people all of the time. If it was just Mid Century it may do better. I don't really know. There is already Reminisce which already covers the past and is a great magazine. Hopefuly this new magazine will share with us those modern day folks that are living the vintage life of each decade. I know there are a lot of our readers here at The Addiction that could be featured in a magazine showing off their collections and lifestyles.

Vintage neon signs to be displayed in Las Vegas

It's a touch of old Vegas: Vintage neon signs are being restored and will adorn a stretch of downtown's Las Vegas Boulevard.

About 17 signs, some from casinos dating to the 1950s, will be part of the boulevard's Scenic Byways Plan, said Danielle Kelly, operations manager for the Neon Museum, which is providing the signs.

The signs — including the horseshoe that once topped Binion's Horseshoe casino and the slipper from the Silver Slipper next to the New Frontier casino — recall earlier years of the city that grew out of the desert to become America's gambling mecca.

"Everyone is working really hard to have the signs restored to their original condition," said Kelly.

Workers recently installed the sign from the Bow and Arrow Motel at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Bonanza Road. It was restored earlier using private donations and was in pretty good shape and only had to be sanded, repainted and relettered. Its internal electronics didn't have to be replaced, said Mark Whitehouse, an account executive with Ultrasigns, which is doing the restorations.

The Hacienda horse and rider from the Hacienda Hotel, where the Mandalay Bay stands today, was already on display. Other sign candidates include those from the Algiers Hotel, the Black Jack Motel and the City Center Motel.

So far the project has gotten $240,000 from the sale of Las Vegas Centennial license plates to refurbish three signs. About $900,000 from the city went for median improvements in the Cultural Corridor.

Whitehouse said restoring the signs has been like getting in a time machine.

"At this point, they've become pieces. Art pieces," he said. "This is something we'd all like to do, and I'm doing it."

The Dumpster Desk...

While going to pick up a Craigslist bed for Calvin we spotted this desk parked next to a dumpster. We pulled this beast home. The desk is pretty heavy and quite large. It was a trick just getting it home. I had to take it apart just to get it into the house. The desk is pretty simple but does have some danish lines to it. I'm unsure who made it or when. The maker's tags are missing...

I really like the handles on it. Luckily I found the original keys in the drawer...

As you can see the top was very sun damaged, dry, and cracked...

I recently sanded the desk completly down then applied a tung oil finish. I also polished all of the brass hardware...

Sorry for the bad photos but the bedroom is kinda dark...

I think the tung oil really brought out the grain really well. I was surprised the top came out so nicely...

Overall, I am pretty happy with the way it turned out. I think it will be a welcome work space in our home...

A couple of recent additions for the desk include this Moonbeam Clock I bought for Molly for our anniversary. They reproduce them but I really like this original with the dark face. The clock works well and the light still works during the alarm. It was a good buy and looks great on the desk...

Our friend Mrs. J had this small tin toy globe that she no longer wanted. I think we pinned it to the late 1930's. It has a few dents and a bit of rust but I can't complain. I love it...

So now we are on a bit of a mission to fill out the desk with vintage items. A desk lamp, a pen set, waste paper basket, and maybe a vintage in/out box will be great things to find to. Hell, the hunt is half the fun.

We have launched our vintage Shasta blog. I figured a new blog dedicated to Louise was needed for several reasons. For one I'm sure that there are folks that visit here that do not care about camper stuff. Two, there will (I hope) be enough activity to warrant it's own blog. I hope that it will not be taking all of my time away from The Addiction. I am sure that it will be somewhat time consuming at first but will die down after a while. It won't be a post a day type of blog. Maybe a post a month. Perhaps a bit more if there are some cool trailer links or online research to post about. The whole thing won't just be about our trailer. Sometimes you would never know that there are people that are flat broke...

I watch all of the vintage travel trailer toys go by on Ebay. Tin, plastic...big, small. Doesn't matter. I never bid because I never have enough cash to snag one. The usually fetch some pretty good coin on there. I just watch them roll by. Sometimes I am amazed at how much they go for.

Now, I know that there are people out there that all they do is collect toys. I'm sure that most trailer toys aren't sold to the casual fan like me. I dig em' but I would rather spend that dough on my real trailer. I watched a vintage Shasta toy bank just go for $170. Wow. I had seen a couple go higher then that but then I watched this one...

It is 1936 Marx Toy Company Lonesome Pine tin trailer with coupe. It sold for...

Our "New" 1964 Shasta...

Trailer Watch 2009 is over for us. I will give the quick version of the story. I found this Shasta listed on Craigslist Friday afternoon. I contacted the seller a few hours after it was posted. They only wanted a $1000 for it. The only thing was it was 6 hours away in Southern Illinois. They replied quickly and we made the long trek on Saturday. We left Wisconsin at 8 am that morning and returned with trailer in tow at 1 o'clock Sunday morning. That was one long day.

A bit about the trailer... It is a 1964 Shasta 16 SC. It was only owned by one family. We met the original owner. He bought it new in 1964 not far from where he lived. The Shasta is in good shape for the most part. Of course there are a few issues with water damage. I would be surprised if there wasn't. It is missing the iconic Shasta wings and will have to find replacements for them. The back window was taken out and an AC unit was stuffed in there. That will go and will have to find a replacement back window. The only other change is the original boomerang cabinet handles have been replaced. No sweat there either. We look forward to the restoration.

I won't go into to much detail here. I hope to launch another blog dedicated to "Louise". That is her new nickname Molly gave her. It was bought in '64 in St. Louis. St. Louis...Louise. It makes sense to us.

I hope to have the new blog up soon. The reason the for the seperate blog is so that there isn't an overflow of trailer information on this blog. I'm sure that there are folks that don't care for the trailer stuff and just want to see Mid Century stuff normally shown here. I will keep the restoration and other trailer information over there for those that want to see it. Here are a few quick shots taken today. There will be much more on the new site.

We have been looking near and far for a vintage travel trailer. It has become part of our addiction. We can't stop looking.

Well, some of the trailers we run across are not right for us but maybe they are for you. Some are pretty cool and some need a ton of help. Our small budget eliminates some of the contenders. Sometime people think their trailer is worth much more than it should be. You still gotta put money into these things after the sale.

Another problem is folks can't seem to sit and type more than 2 full descriptive lines into their Craigslist ad. What is up with that? This isn't frickin' Twitter folks! You can actually write a full description. Good pictures help too!

It hasn't leaked for years and is repaired. I have included a picture of the corner where the paneling had come loose. It is cosmetic, and could be fixed.

Vintage TV antenna. Sorry for the crummy picture. It isn't in too bad of shape. Not sure that I could actually get it to work. But it is a nice display item. Needs a bit of cleaning up. We were watching the 2nd season of Mad Men and there is one just like it on top of Harry Crane's TV. I paid 3 bucks or so for it at a flea market.

This ice crusher was something that I always wanted but never found a good one for a good price. This one is in pretty good condition and it was free. Another find from Mrs. J. There is a small amount of pitting in the chrome top but I can't complain.

The large red and white butter dish was a gift to Molly from her sister. We found the other container up north. I'm calling it a sugar bowl because we don't know what it is. It does have a handle on the back. Not really sure. The bottom of the "sugar bowl" has the Jiffy Ware logo stamp on it. I'm not quite sure that the butter dish is from the same company but it makes a nice set. Molly paid a few bucks for it so it wasn't a bad deal.

This ball pitcher was another gift from Mrs. J. She actually had two of these but we couldn't justify taking both. What the heck are we going to do with two? This one is in real nice shape. The other had a chip in the spout so this was the winner.

Trailer Rant Time...

Alright... I'm kinda pissed so I'm phoning this one in. Just having one of those days.

We left this morning after I got off work to go look at a trailer. It was the 1964 Yellowstone pictured above. I spotted this one on Craigslist for $1500. The seller sent me some smaller pictures but it looked alright from the photos. I could see some things that needed attention from the pictures but nothing horrible or major. There was some water stains under the back window and a few other items that I knew going into it that would need some work right away.

I went back and forth with the seller setting up a time to come look at it so I had alot of time to think about this one. Which doesn't help me because that was all I could think about for a week. So this morning we drove 2 hours to go look at it. Well, the seller told me that it was "nice inside but the outside needed paint". We got there and I already started seeing things that made me iffy...

The back panel that showed water stains in the pictures was completely delaminated from moisture. The front window started to show signs of the same. Not something you can just sand out. Every window had water stains under them which didn't show in the picturs. The roof vent had leaked at some point causing the roof to bow and sag. The floor tiles were kinda ready to come up so I knew already that they would get replaced. That's no sweat. I was going to do that anyway. The bathroom area was missing it's potty but that wasn't a deal breaker for us either. There was a few other half-assed repairs that could have been fixed. The one good thing was that the appliances look real good and worked. Pretty much all the hardware was original and there. The original louvered screen door was there and just needed some attention. If you have never seen the louvered screen it is really neat. I'm surprised it was still there. The exterior door did close with it's handle but was padlocked instead of using it's own lock set. I love it when people do that.

I looked at the exterior and I was kinda let down. The outside skin was just in OK shape. The windows would all need to be pulled out and taken apart re-weather stripped, polished, and re-puttied. I knew that before going up there. So it wasn't that big of deal. Just time and money consuming. There was A TON of silicone around each window. I'm guessing thier way of stopping any leaks. A few marker lights were broken which I also knew about. The rear bumper was completly rusted out and would have to be cut off. The frame looked just ok and I didn't see any major holes. The plywood floor was sagging and had serious signs of water damage and rot. It was also patched in a bunch of places with plywood, tin, ROOFING SHINGLES and a large amount of goop. The area that had the toilet in it had strange plumbing running out of the bottom. Now a patch here and there would have been fine but roofing shingles? Come on. Mystery wires galore. They didn't have any keys to the exterior access panels either. I didn't even look at the axle or brakes too much because I knew I wouldn't be towing it today or ever for that matter. I'm sure they would have needed to be pulled apart and redone.

The icing on this cake was that The last thing I looked at was a panel under one of the closets. When I opened it it had insulation by the wheel well the insulation was a home for mice and I could see the droppings and a nest. There were some other things too but I won't go on any longer.

Now, you might be thinking that I'm nit picking everything to death. BUT... I know what it takes to redo one of these old trailers. I have seen what water damage can do to a 45+ year old trailer. I would have to pulled all the cabinets and replace the floor, ceiling and walls. And once you are doing that you might as well start to re-wire and replace all the insulation. It goes on and on. Next thing you know you have a large amount of money stuck in it that was not apparent in the begining.

I know of a quote by an "Airstreamer" that said "They ALL leak". He is very right. BUT... that could have been information that was brought to my attention YESTERDAY. I am more than willing to fix those problems and work on it. I look forward to the challenge. I'm kind of a handy guy. I am willing to put in a bunch of man hours into a project. I am also willing to put in money from our VERY limited budget toward an investment like a vintage trailer. HOWEVER... the inside wasn't "very nice" and it didn't "just need paint". I know that something like this that was made over 45 years ago wasn't suppose to last forever. I know I'm not going to find a trailer of this age that just needs to have the floor swept and a screw tightened. Not on our budget. I know that. BUT...before I drive over 2 hours one way to come look at your trailer maybe you should come clean and tell me up front about any problems.

Ok. I'm done now. Time to keep looking for a trailer...

The store takes old picnic items and fixes them up and sell them to you as sets. The items are mostly on the tail end of The Addiction's main era of focus but still awesome nontheless. She has full picnic sets as well as coolers and suitcases. I have to say that I think her idea is a great one.

You can see from him sitting on a CD that this ceramic panther is pretty small. I'm sure that he is from Japan given the paint job. He was only 4 bucks.

Sorry...There is a bit of wash out from the flash but this is one of our wacky finds. A ceramic hanging wall planter. The wacky part is the bird being bright red and the back being chartreuse with the black splatter glaze. What a wierd color combo. There is a chip out of his tail but heck...he was only 50 cents at a garage sale. I'm not sure what we are going to do with him but I couldn't leave it there for 50 cents.

One tubing cap has been replaced with a similar, but not identical one. You would likely not notice it if it were not pointed out. The vinyl is near perfect with 4 tiny slits in the seat cushion that do not show (one is on the edge, one is down in a natural fold, one is on the underside of the armrest pad). There is no other tears or marks to any of the other pads and they appear as new. The Best Pop-Up Camper EVER...

Sorry about all of the travel trailer stuff lately. It is that time of the year so I have the urge to get one.

I did a post about The Best Travel Trailer EVER a little while ago. I never thought I would find the best pop-up EVER. I am really not a fan of pop-up trailers. It's just not my bag. However, I would pull this sucker in a heartbeat!...

This is the Odyssey. Not much is known about it. In fact I found a thread from the owner on RV.Net trying to get more information about it. The styling reminds me of those late 50's and early 60's fiberglass boats we covered in an earlier post. It really looks like it was made by Detroit's designers at that time.

It really isn't a "true" pop-up. It has a clamshell design as you can see from the vintage picture below...
There has to be a few more of these out there. I hope someone can help him with his quest to find more info. I would love to restore one of these and pull it behind a classic car. You can read the original thread on RV.Net...HERE.

These scoots are pretty slick. It is the Zepii Electric Scooter. This all electric scooter really has the look of an vintage Vespa. So far they are only available in the UK. Sucks for us. I have no idea if they plan to export to the US or not. I was going to email them to ask but I'm not really in the market for a scooter at this point. Madison Airstream Rally...

The Wally Byam Caravan Club International held it's international Airstream rally from June 28th to July 4th in Madison, WI. The 4th was their open to the public day so being a fan of vintage trailers and Airstreams in general, I thought I would head up there and check it out.

There were something like 900 Airstreams there. Quite a site to see. There were so many there that we didn't make it through the whole camp site. There was every make and model that Airstream has ever made there. Brand new giant Class A motorhomes all the way down to tiny Bambi trailers. I was really there to see the vintage tin so here are a few pictures of the trailers that caught my eye...

Shown above is three reproduction pieces from the Teco Art Pottery Collection from Prairie Arts. Pretty slick looking stuff, I think. I don't follow the Bungalow/Prairie/Frank Lloyd Wright set too close so these flew under my radar for quite some time. I do think that they could fit right in with your Mid-Century Modern setting. The pottery is available in 12 styles and 6 colors. The colors include green, white, darkbrown, natural, aqua, and orange.

My favorite is the "Rocket Vase" shown above. Very cool stuff. You can pick these up on sale at the Prairie Mod Store in their overstock sale area. Some pretty decent prices there.

This is cool and pisses me off at the same time. I had done a embroidered pillow for Calvin's room and had been thinking of other Mid Century embroidery projects I could do. Googie was on that list. Well, someone beat me to it.

I was searching around for info on how to make concrete Tikis and I found this kit. I thought it was a kind of cool DIY project. Seems pretty easy to me looking at the instructions. They suggest the Moai face can be made into a planter (with a pot), bookends, or a door stop. I'm sure there is a ton of other stuff you could do with it. The Bauer Pottery Company of Los Angeles manufactures Bauer 2000 pottery styled after Bauer vintage American pottery. That includes Russel Wright's American Modern line which dates back to 1937. Here is a quote from the website that talks about the new line...

I love the designs and colors but I have to say that these are not cheap. Perhaps they can be found for less in the secondary market but if you buy from the site they will break your bank. The butter dish shown below is priced at 50 bucks. I would hate to price a full 6 or 8 piece dinner set. That is why maybe you could buy a few pieces that really blow your skirt up to compliment your existing dinnerware or home's design. Here are a few pieces that would fit nicely in that idea. I have been kinda hot on travel trailers lately. You know that time of year when you want to get out and about. Doing some searching I came across this trailer...

It is the 1960 Holiday House Model "X" (later named The Geographic). Those lines are so awesome. That big wrap around front window. Wow, this thing is neat.

I have talked shoes before. As you know, I dig Converse All Stars. Pam and Nathan are talking Converse over at Retro Renovation. I really dug the tan ones Nathan was wearing in the picture. He mentioned that they were custom so I headed over to Converse's website to check out the custom options... This is some AWESOME stuff. You can pick out your own custom shoes with a ton of options. It is really easy to use. Just pick the model you want and which material (canvas, leather, suede) and start to customize.

You can choose your Body colors including the tongue and heel stripe. You could even choose different colors for each. Prints are available too. Thats too kooky for me but you might dig em. Other options are

-Inside lining

-Laces

-Stitching

-Sidewall

-Racing stripe

-Personal ID (you can choose up to 12 characters to put on the outside or heel stripe)

Here are a few I threw together just to see the options available. I think they look kinda cool.

First is a pair like Nathans. Tan canvas upper, black laces, lining, and sidewall.

Some lowtops with a blue upper, grey laces, stitching, and lining, parchment sidewall and red racing stripes.

Black leather uppers, stitching, and sidewalls. White lining, laces, and racing stripes.

Tobacco Brown suede upper. Chocolate brown stitching and lining. Off white laces. Parchment sidewall and red racing stripes.

Sure they aren't over the top but I think they look kinda vintage. Ya know, something classic. I don't need zebra print loud shoes. I would actually wear these.

They are not horrible prices given that they are custom made for you. The site says 2-4 weeks shipping which doesn't sound bad either. They are available in men's, woman's and kid's styles and sizes. We were recently given a ton of magazines from the 40's, 50's and 60's. Molly's Aunt and Uncle cleaned out a old lady's home and saved all of these from the trash. They thought we might be able to use them and they sure were right! Thanks guys!

There are a lot of womans magazines such as McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, and Mademoiselle. These are great to look at and have some real funny things in them. Some of the recipes are some of the worst food I have ever seen. Some really nasty stuff. The ads are the best.

The really best part is the Better Homes and Gardens from the late forties, fifties, and early sixties. They are great. I haven't even been able to get through all of them yet.

I hope to share many of the things in these publications. The Better Homes and Gardens have enough in them to fill a blog alone. Not everyone can get their hands on these mags so I figure that there is much to share. I know I have learned a lot from looking at these.

Solair Indoor/Outdoor Chair...

I guess that these are real popular in Canada where they were made but I had never seen these before.

This is the Solair Chair. They have a circular plastic seat and a metal base. They were made by Canadian company IEL by the Italian designers Fabiano and Panzini. I'm told they were sold from the 60's until the 80's but it looks like IEL still sells them. However, the leg design doesn't look at all as cool as the vintage one. I also think that you have to buy a set of ten from them. I like the mod look they have. I will have to see if I can find a couple of vintage ones.
