Craigslist Finds...

Retro Style 1950's leather couch and love seat -Must Sell-Open Offers (Milwaukee)

This is different set. You don't see them like this every day. Not sure how comfortable it would be, but they look cool. I don't know I would pay what this they want for them. Take a look...

Mid-Century Modern Sofa and Chairs - $500 (Uptown)
Chicago Craigslist. I kinda dig this set. The floral on the chair is a little much but that could be fixed. It is actually 2 chairs, so thats a pretty good deal.

MID-CENTURY PATIO OUTDOOR SET with LOVESEAT - $500 (pilsen)
This listing is a few days old. This is neat. Stripped and a new coat of paint these would make a great set.

My Favorite Online Store...

...That I've never shopped at! Moon Shine Lamp and Shade is a online retailer of reproduction and custom fiberglass shades and lamps. Sadly, I have not purchased anything from them, but sure do like to look at their website. In fact, we were watching the movie I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and noticed a bowling ball lamp in Larry's bedroom that had a neat fiberglass shade on it. Sure enough... that shade is from Moon Shine.

It looks like they can do pretty much anything you want in fiberglass. They have custom options such as...
- Shape and Size
- Number of tiers
- Color of shades
- Lacing
- Images and designs
- Diffusers
- Hardware applications

With choices like that you could pretty much make a shade for any application or to fit that quirky vintage lamp.

I'm also impressed with the lamp bases they carry. They have new made wire lamps in a bunch of styles like the one shown here...

They also have started carrying George Nelson Bubble lamps and fiberglass chairs...

They also carry a few non-lighting items like pillows, screen door inserts, boomerang coffee tables and wall art.

I have to say that I am quite impressed by the website. If I can't find a perfect shade for one of our lamps I will certainly be putting in a order to them. What can I say? I am a sucker for fiberglass shades.

If any Addiction readers have a Moon Shine shade or lamp...I sure would like to see it and hear about Moon Shine's service.

M21 Flat Panel TV...

The M21 Flat Panel Televison is created by Joe Wilkerson of Wilkerson Furniture. This is something of a prototype, but Joe has read my mind. I have been wanting to do a project like this after seeing another homemade console built by someone (still looking for a picture of that one).

A project like this one would not be too hard for the home woodworker. I was playing with the idea of gutting a non working tube set and retrofitting a modern tv in it. That may prove to be more of a pain. Besides it really limits the size of the tube that can be used. I think scratch building a housing for a LCD TV might be the way to go. I believe that Joe used a plasma. I would rather use a LCD. That is the plus side of DIY.

I have been tracking down vintage TV and radio knobs for the project. I have found online suppliers for the grill cloth for the front. Trying to find the right set of (dummy) rabbit ears might be the only problem. The are out there but finding a good set is the trick.

The Wilkerson M21 is to test out the intrest in the market. No price has been anounced. I don't think that I am Joe's potential customer, but others may be. I gotta give it to him. He did get the motors turning in my head...

Here are a few neat actual 60's TVs that could be a great designs for the console...

Iconi Interiors...

A good friend of ours, Coni Marotz, recently opened here own store in Madison, Wisconsin. Today, I finally was able to make it to Iconi to look around.

She has a wonderful mix of new and vintage furniture and other items. I am sure that anyone that loves vintage can find something in this great store. Lots of eye candy to look at. Coni really understands the way to mix vintage pieces, new materials, and design influence such as Asian, Mid Century and Art Deco. Coni is also very knowledgeable about rugs, having worked in that industry for quite some time. She has some great rugs that would fit into any Mid Century decor.

So when in Madison be sure to check out this awesome shop.

Pride and Joy...

He made it!

I have tried not to turn this into a family blog, but what can I say? I am a proud Dad...

Calvin James Pettit was born on Sunday, April 13th at 02:48 PM.
He weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces.
Length was 19 1/2 inches.

Mommy and baby are doing great. Calvin so far is quite the sleeper. He doesn't keep his eyes open much. That will change soon and we are looking forward to it.

So if there isn't much activity here on The Addiction... you know why. ;)

Vintage Western Baby Room...

You may have noticed that The Addiction has been SLOW lately. Well...
We are expecting our first child within a week or so!

We have spent quite a bit of time on the baby's room lately. I thought I would share what we have done...
Being that we are into vintage style and not really into the cutesy bears and bunnies nursery things. We went with a Vintage Cowboy room (yep, it is a boy). Many childern of the 50's were big time into the westerns and their cowboy heros and thought it would make for a neat room. We wanted a room that he wouldn't grow out of in a year. The cowboy theme is kinda popular right now with expecting parents. That means there is a lot of sets to chose from on the market. The goal was to make a room knowing that we could do this in the DIY style instead of paying big bucks for things we could make ourselfs. The colors we selected were red, light blue, and tans/browns. We found a fabric we liked that had a really neat pattern...

http://www.thefabricfinder.com/GoldingRodeoDenim3.JPG

We also wanted to incorporate our vintage style along with the new made items. If you really shop around you can find some pretty good deals out there. Making a large portion of it really helped with the cost of it. My Mother help out a ton and we thank her a bunch for that.

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Insead of me blabbing on about it, lets take a look...

This is the entry from the hallway...

Here is the entry from the bathroom side. We wanted to keep the wall color simple. We thought about doing a wall in cowboy wall paper but figured that it would get too busy with the fabric pattern. I made the window cornices/valances (or whatever you want to call them) with the fabric for the tan roman shades..

The crib is vintage and has been in Molly's family for a long time. Don't worry, It checks out and won't be a problem...

The crib bumpers and skirt was made by my Mother. She did a great job. Sadly, I couldn't get a very good picture of them. She bought a bumper kit and made them from the cowboy fabric...

My Mom also used a bears and bunnies mobile and converted it to a more appropriate horse mobile. She use the fabric and little toy horses from The Oriental Trading Company...

We picked up these vintage Broyhill dressers off of Craigslist for only $125. They are in great shape and provide a lot of needed storage. The stick pony a gift from my parents and is vintage 1940's. Unfortunately, I didn't get a good picture of the framed photo on the wall. We found the picture of Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, and Gabby Hayes for a whole $2.50 at an antique store. I found the frames for all of the art in the room at St. Vincent De Paul for 2 bucks each. The Roy Rogers picture has a matte I made using cut paper...
I found this old magazine of short stories for $2.50. I liked the cover a lot but the poor magazine was falling apart. I used another frame from St. Vinnies and it worked great because it already had a matte in it. I only backed it with the tan paper and mounted it...
The magazine was too worn to save but it had a bunch of cool line drawings in it. I cut them out and decoupaged them to another St. Vinnies frame...

The cardboard cutouts above the crib are vintage 50's from the Dolly Toy Company. They actually hung in Molly's Dad's room when he was young...

We kept the lighting pretty simple. The vintage lamp was given to us from a family friend a year ago and works perfectly in the room. I had to rewire and refinish the base but its a great little lamp...

The vintage cowboy shade was found on Ebay for a pretty good price...

Another Mom made item is this diper stacker...

This is one of the only built-ins in our house. The shelves hold his books and other collectables. A cool vintage Roy Rogers toy puzzle and vintage turquoise kids cowboy hat look great up there. Of course you gotta have Woody also...

My folks gave us this rocking chair they had since the 70's. So I stripped and painted it red. I made the chair pads for it with a tan faux suede-ish fabric....

I made these braided leather ties for more of a western look...

I'm pretty proud of this one even though it is a crappy picture. I made this hand embroidered pillow based on one of the images from the fabric in the rest of the room. Yeah, guys can sew too! Anyway, I took quite a while to do but I'm happy with it. I will have to take a better picture of it..

I hope everyone has enjoyed our efforts. I'm sure our Son will also.

NOTE: Thank you to everyone for the kind comments! We had fun doing this project. Knowing that it would be a appreciated by us and by Calvin really helped the project along. It really has come out nicely if I do say so myself. We have been adding bits and pieces here and there and will keep everyone posted on any great new stuff.

Thanks again!
Brian and Molly

1961 How-To-Do-It Encyclopedia (Part 5)

Well it has been a while since I have posted but lets get to it...

I really dig the benches in this section. First up is a bench for your turn table. Has a neat pull out for your 45s...

DIY Pedal Car Kit...

I thought this was kind of a neat old school project. The "Rocky Roadster" Wooden Sedan Pedal Car Kit can be purchased with or without the precut wooden body pieces. I think the body could use some upgrades but the lines are cool. I would rather make my own body.

The whole kit with body is $150.00 with free shipping from Pedal Car Planet. The chassis is also sold for $75.95 for the more crafty folks. They also sell the body separate but I'm not sure what you are going to do with that with no wheels?

Cool Digital Camera...

This is the Rolleiflex MiniDigi AF 5.0. It is a mini 5 megapixel digital version of the classic camera. When they say mini they mean it. It is only 3 inches high. Supposedly the picture quality isn't anything to write home about. Given the price you could probably find a better deal on a mini camera. If you want a neat little camera and more into style than here ya go. Pricing is expected to be $399 MSRP.

No Reservations...

I watch Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations on the Travel Channel quite a bit. Tony did a show on Hawaii and actually touched (briefly) on Tiki bars and drinks. And guess what... he actually liked it! Which, if you have watched his show, is amazing because Tony is one cynical bastard. That's why I like him.
But, what's not to like about Tiki?

The clip includes a QUICK down and dirty Tiki history and Tony enjoying cocktails at the La Mariana Sailing Club. Enjoy...
